The name Scrubby Rise comes from the vineyard at the front of the century old ironstone cellars, its rich soils providing some of our best fruit every season. The original Scrubby Rise vineyard sits on ancient rocks, is totally flat and contains no ‘scrub’ or bushland to speak of. The late resurrector of Wirra Wirra, Greg Trott, named the vineyard Scrubby Rise in the Australian tradition of contrary nicknames. So in the great front bars of iconic pubs across Australia you can expect to find a person with red hair called ‘Bluey’, a tall man called ‘shorty’ and a Shiraz from a flat, scrub free vineyard called Scrubby Rise.
